Knowledge translation is a fundamental process in the world of research and healthcare aimed at translating the results of scientific research in a way that is useful and understandable for citizens, clinical practice, and healthcare policies. In essence, it involves ensuring that the information and evidence produced by research are accessible, understandable, and usable by various stakeholders, including citizens, patients, and professionals in related fields.

This process is not limited simply to the literal translation of documents or research findings from one language to another, but also involves adapting information to different contexts and audiences. It involves the use of effective communication strategies, which may include simplifying technical language, using graphs or images to illustrate complex concepts, and disseminating information through various communication channels.

In the context of Cochrane, knowledge translation is particularly important as it allows systematic reviews and research evidence produced by the organization to be made accessible to a wide range of audiences. Through knowledge translation, Cochrane aims to improve understanding of best clinical practices, inform patient decisions, and influence healthcare policies globally.

Translating knowledge into Italian

Cochrane Italy is preparing a new knowledge translation plan to promote evidence-based research in Italy. This plan includes several activities aimed at translating Cochrane resources into Italian and promoting a culture of evidence-based clinical practice. The goal is to increase awareness of the importance of evidence-based research and improve the health of the Italian population by providing the necessary tools to make informed choices about their health.

You can help us achieve this goal by participating in various ways:

  1. Creation and/or translation of Blogshots: Blogshots are short and visually appealing graphical representations of information taken from Cochrane systematic reviews. They are designed to be shared on social media and other online channels to quickly disseminate relevant and up-to-date information. Creating or translating blogshots helps reach a wider and more diverse audience, thus contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in healthcare.
  2. Translation of Plain Language Summaries: Plain Language Summaries (PLS) are simple and accessible summaries of Cochrane systematic reviews, written in clear and understandable language for the general public. They are designed to help citizens and patients better understand research evidence and make informed decisions about their health. Translating PLSs makes this information accessible to a wider variety of audiences, including those who may not be experts in the field of medicine or research.
  3. Translation of Cochrane Resources into Italian: These resources include practical guides, video tutorials, e-learning modules, and articles on the website. Translating these resources into Italian makes training and information about evidence-based research accessible to a wider Italian community.

What do you gain

We understand the importance of volunteers' work, but we also acknowledge that not everyone has the resources to dedicate their time without any form of recognition. For this reason, Cochrane Italy offers various ways to value its volunteers, tailored to their contributions and needs:

  • Training is fundamental to volunteering. By collaborating with us, volunteers have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of research practices and enhance their skills in evidence-based medicine. Moreover, translation work will be preceded by formal and informal meetings where skills, guidelines, and suggestions are shared.
  • Through the Cochrane Engage platform, volunteers can earn points to gain Cochrane Membership Points. Points are awarded for their contribution and active participation in projects and activities. With Membership, volunteers can access Cochrane resources and unlock benefits and privileges within the community.
  • Volunteers are mentioned in our Volunteer List. Their contribution is publicly recognized on our website. Additionally, if they wish, they can be mentioned with a dedicated post on our social media.
  • Volunteers who consistently collaborate on various projects or who have distinguished themselves with particularly complex or outstanding work may receive personalized support and recommendations through Cochrane Engage or LinkedIn, as they are valuable tools for developing their professional career in the field of healthcare research.

Queste risorse includono guide pratiche, video tutorial, moduli di e-learning e articoli presenti nel sito-web. La traduzione di queste risorse in italiano permette di rendere accessibile la formazione e l'informazione riguardanti la ricerca basata sull'evidenza a una più ampia comunità italiana.

Cosa ci guadagno?

Noi sappiamo quanto il lavoro dei volontari sia importante, ma capiamo che non tutti hanno le risorse per poter dedicare il proprio tempo senza ricevere nessun tipo di riconoscimento. Per questo, Cochrane Italia propone diverse strade per valorizzare i propri volontari, anche a seconda dei contributi portati e delle esigenze del volontario stesso:

  • La formazione è alla base del lavoro volontario. Collaborando con noi, i volontari hanno l'opportunità di approfondire la loro comprensione delle pratiche di ricerca e migliorare le proprie competenze nel campo della medicina basata sull'evidenza. Inoltre, i lavori di traduzione verranno preceduti da incontri formali e informali in cui vengono condivise competenze, linee guida, e suggerimenti sul lavoro da svolgere insieme.
  • Attraverso la piattaforma Cochrane Engage, i volontari possono accumulare punti per guadagnare la Cochrane Membership. I punti vengono assegnati per il loro contributo e la loro partecipazione attiva a progetti e attività. Grazie alla Membership, i volontari possono accedere alle risorse Cochrane e sbloccare vantaggi e privilegi all'interno della comunità.
  • I volontari vengono menzionati nella nostra Lista dei volontari. Il loro contributo viene riconosciuto pubblicamente sul nostro sito. Inoltre, se lo desiderano, possono essere menzionati con un post dedicato nei nostri social media.
  • I volontari che collaborano in modo constante su diversi progetti, o che si sono distinti per un lavoro particolarmente complesso o eccellente, possono ricevere supporto e raccomandazioni personalizzate attraverso Cochrane Engage o LinkedIn, come strumenti utili per sviluppare la propria carriera professionale nel campo della ricerca sanitaria.
