Cochrane Library is one of the most authoritative and reliable sources in the field of evidence-based medicine. It is a collection of various databases containing different types of scientific articles, or research evidence, independent and of high quality. The Cochrane Library represents a valuable resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, students, and anyone interested in searching for reliable and up-to-date scientific evidence.

Here are some tips for using the Cochrane Library effectively:

  • Advanced Search: Use the advanced search function to narrow down results based on specific criteria, such as study type, publication year, author, and more.
  • Browse by Topic: Explore the Library using the browse by topic feature, which organizes content into thematic categories to facilitate the search for specific information.
  • Reading and Critical Appraisal: Carefully read systematic reviews and other available materials, assessing their quality, relevance, and applicability to your research or clinical practice needs.
  • Use of Review Protocols: Consult review protocols to obtain detailed information on the methodological process followed during the preparation of the systematic review.

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR)

It is the leading resource for systematic reviews in health care. The CDSR includes Cochrane Reviews (the systematic reviews) and protocols for Cochrane Reviews as well as editorials. The CDSR also has occasional supplements. The CDSR is updated regularly as Cochrane Reviews are published ‘when ready’ and form monthly issues.

A systematic review attempts to identify, appraise and synthesize all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a given research question.

Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)

It is a highly concentrated source of reports of randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials.

Cochrane Methodology Register (CMR)

It is a bibliography of publications that report on methods used in the conduct of controlled trials. It includes journal articles, books, and conference proceedings, and the content is sourced from MEDLINE and hand searches. CMR contains studies of methods used in reviews and more general methodological studies that could be relevant to anyone preparing systematic reviews.

Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE)

It is the only database to contain abstracts of systematic reviews that have been quality-assessed. Each abstract includes a summary of the review together with a critical commentary about the overall quality.
